Student Drivers
Driving is a major responsibility!
As Roland-Story students become driving-aged, here are resources specific to Roland-Story, along with the Iowa Department of Transportation, for becoming a student driver!
Driver Test: Skip the Trip
We've teamed up with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) for Skip the Trip at Roland-Story Middle School. This program lets Roland-Story students take the driver knowledge test needed for a driver's instruction permit right here at our school in a familiar, comfortable setting. The program saves parents from needing to leave work, and potentially multiple trips to the DOT center if your student doesn't pass on the first try.
Acquiring Permit
After passing the driver's knowledge test, they'll receive a test receipt email. Depending on the county the student lives in, they need to go to the county courthouse or driver's license service center to obtain the instruction permit with a parent or legal guardian. Sometimes this requires an appointment.
Driving with Permit
After an instructional permit has been secured, then driving can be started. There are options to learning to drive:
Obtaining a School Permit
A school permit (also known as a Special Minor's Restricted License) allows eligible students to drive to school and related activities one hour prior to and one hour following an event, using the most direct route. This permit is valid for a maximum of two years, expiring on your birthday. It serves as both a school permit and instruction permit when not used for school-related trips.
